Reverse osmosis home systems are the biggest selling water purifiers on the market. They out-sell other clean water systems and get lots of good reviews. Moreover, they are widely used by public water authorities in our cities and municipalities. You may very well be drinking reverse osmosis water.
But there are problems with these systems that the advertisers are anxious to cover up.
The easiest problem to see is their cost.
Reverse osmosis home systems are not cheap. And actually, this was what first alerted me to the other problems associated with them. Because my own purchases are often driven by price, I didn't just follow the herd and buy one of these.
Instead, I did some research. And I've come to the conclusion that a different purification system, which I installed in my house 30 years ago, is safer. (It's also cheaper!)
Here's two things I found in my research.
First, reverse osmosis home systems get rid of dirt, some chemicals -- and all the minerals.
Just think about this for a minute. Minerals are found in rocks, deep underground. Water in the lower earth naturally dissolves them, and as we draw that water up and use it for drinking these essentials minerals are absorbed by our bodies which must have them to be healthy.
It's a perfect, natural cycle that has benefited mankind for thousands of years. But reverse osmosis home systems break this cycle, because they removes those healthy, natural trace minerals. Reverse osmosis water is sterile and has no nourishing life in it.
Your body, and especially your children's young, developing bodies, must have traces of minerals in them. For instance, you will have probably heard that your teeth need calcium to grow properly. Well, calcium is a mineral. And you must have it to maintain healthy bones, help your blood to clot, enable your muscles to contract, transmit signals through your nerves, get oxygen through your system, and make it possible for your cells to secrete fluids.
There are other things calcium does, but you get my point here. Without this trace mineral you are going to get sick, visit the dentist, and your children's bodies will not develop properly..
You need a regular top-up of calcium and many other trace minerals, and the natural way to get them is through your drinking water. Reverse osmosis home systems completely cut you off from one of the best natural sources.
And there's a second problem I discovered. Potentially worse. Reverse osmosis home systems can't get rid of many cancer-causing chemicals dissolved in your water.
There are two easy ways you can quickly confirm this.
One way is to ask your local municipality.
It probably uses an industrial-sized reverse osmosis system to supply clean water. If it does it will almost certainly put chlorine into the 'clean' water that leaves the plant to bleach and kill the chemicals the filter was not able to catch. Just ring them and they'll confirm this. It's why sometimes you can taste chlorine in public drinking water.
(Their reasoning on this seems to be that since only a small percentage of the water they supply you will be actually used for drinking, a little bit of chlorine won't hurt you or your children. And that if you're alarmed, you can buy a filter to take out the chlorine.)
Another way is to think.
A reverse osmosis filter strains out chemicals in water by forcing the water through a membrane. But if any chemical molecules are smaller than water molecules, they will pass through the tiny holes in the membrane. In fact, hundreds of cancer-causing chemical molecules are smaller than H2O. They get through into reverse osmosis water. So you and your children cannot be protected from them by any of the reverse osmosis home systems being sold.
Local authorities do the best they can with limited funds. But the federal government regulators they work with are overworked (and therefore lax) and anyway the standards of purity they are required to meet are too low for comfort.
If I was you, I would put aside the advertising from the big businesses which make a fortune by selling reverse osmosis home systems, and consider some safer, cheaper alternatives. In fact there's an excellent one I highly recommend at my web site.
